How To Move a Hot Tub

A hot tub is a big investment, so making plans as to how to move a hot tub is important if you are planning a move and want to take your hot tub with you. With careful planning and preparation, however, a hot tub can be moved safely with no damage.

Planning Before the Hot Tub is Moved

When looking for moving companies, find out if the moving company has experience with relocating hot tubs and actually knows how to move a hot tub. Then when you hire the company, make them aware that a hot tub is involved in the move.  This will allow the moving company to take special measures for packing it in their removal van. Because of the space that hot tubs take up in a van, you may be forced to pay a ‘bulk article charge' for the hot tub. Also make sure that you have the receipts for the hot tub purchase so if the hot but is damaged during the move, you can prove current retail value.

Preparing For the Move

First of all, if you are unsure about any facet of dismantling your hot tub, call the hot tub dealer or manufacturer before dismantling. Here are some general guidelines:

1) An important point is that the equipment pact, which includes the heater, filter, pump, blower and electrical and plumbing units, be serviced before the hot tub is moved. A lot of hot tub dealers recommend removing this equipment pack, draining it and packing it separately in a strong box. Some models require the equipment pack to be left attached to the shell, so it is best to check with individual models. It's best to learn how to move a hot tub according to the various models so that you move it correctly.

2) A hot tub must be drained before moving day. If a hot tub user has only had the hot tub a short space of time and has not experience draining before, it is best to call the dealer to do this for then, or ask for instructions on how to do this themselves. A lot of hot tub makes come equipped with a hose bibb that attaches to a garden house. After they are drained, hot tubs still have about five or six gallons of water, which should be removed with a wet-dry vacuum so it does not spill and damage carpets and flooring.

3) If the customer is moving from a warm climate to a cool one where colder temperatures will be experience in movement, the whole plumping system should be drained which will stop damage to the pipes. This has to be done by a professional.

Receiving the Hot Tub At It's New Location

When the hot tub is delivered, check it over. Make sure nothing on the hot tub was damaged during the move. If there is damage or parts that are missing, this has to be noted.

If you don't want to reassemble the hot tub yourself, you can call a local hot tub dealer who can have someone come out and put it together.
