Build A Hot Tub

Want your hot tub to stand out as different from everybody else's? If you are handy with tools you might want to take advantage of your skills to build a hot tub to your own custom specifications.

One of the reasons you want might want to build a hot tub instead of buying one is to save money. Prices are ever changing but you can save more than 75% of the costs if you handle the construction and installation yourself.

Before you do anything, however, check the building codes in your community and make sure you abide by them each step of the process, including calling the inspectors in to review your work when necessary. Also, some municipalities require that extensive electrical work be done by a licensed electrician which may add up to a couple of hundred dollars, depending on where you live.

When building a hot tub, it helps to keep things simple. A hot tub is not some elaborate structure with thousands of interconnecting parts. It is simply a round (usually) waterproof container that is strong enough to hold lots of water. Yes, you may opt to add enhancements like heating (probably), water jets (maybe), and lights. But, simply when you throw away all the bells and whistles - a hot tub is a simple container.

The first thing you will need to consider when you decide to build a hot tub is the spacing issue. Where are you going to put it? Is it going to be indoor or outdoor? If you need electricity for it, is it going to be expensive to route electricity to that location? Is the size of the area big enough for the hot tub you are planning to build?

The most important decision you will make in building a hot tub is how to construct the foundation. You need a strong foundation that will support water volumes of 400 gallons and more and water weights of over 900 pounds.

Another important decision you have to decide on is what materials that you are going to use.  The most popular type of hot tub to build is a wooden one.  You can build a hot tub by hand in this case as you do not need it to be water tight since the pond liner can seal the water in.  However, this oftentimes causes plumbing issues that need to be properly dealt with.

Luckily, if you decide to build using a pre-fab unit, most of the planning and decision making has been done for you. You can now find hot tub kits with all that pieces you need included. These kits will tend to be on the basic side but for most people it should fit their needs perfectly.

Building your own hot tub can be fun but the best part of it will be the enjoyment you and your family get out of using it in the years to come.
